Description
The afternoon winter sun casts long shadows at San Lorenzo de El Escorial, the imposing royal castle in the foothills of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains northwest of Madrid, Spain. I chose pale processing to match the winter light. Almost all sources you read about this castle mention the windows...there are about 2600 of them. There are also 1200 doors and 100 miles of passages. It was conceived by Philip II to serve several purposes. First as a grand mausoleum for Spain's royal family, starting with his father, the Holy Roman emperor Charles V. Indeed, one of the most interesting rooms in the castle is the mausoleum, or the Royal Pantheon, where four centuries of Spanish royalty are entombed, all in highly polished marble and gold-plated bronze. The building also served as a monastery, as a 'small' palace, and as a center for studies in aid of the Counter-Reformation cause. The palace was built between 1563 and 1584 in a new Spanish Renaissance architectural style that is extremely sober and unadorned. On 2 November 1984, UNESCO declared The Royal Seat of San Lorenzo of El Escorial a World Heritage Site.
